DR. H. H. HOLMES

The first serial killer, Dr. H. H. Holmes, was a murderer who preyed on women and children in the late 19-century. He was also the first American serial killer. He was a complex man who was a criminal, a con man, a murderer and a fraud. He was also a wealthy man who owned a hotel and buildings. Dr. Herman Webster Holmes, better known as Dr. H. H. Holmes, has been called the first serial killer in American history. While the exact number of his victims will never be known, it is believed that he killed at least nine women and perhaps as many as twenty-one. He was a pharmacist by education, a fraudster by profession, and a murderer by inclination. He confessed to one murder but was never prosecuted for any of the others, and was hanged in Philadelphia in 1896 for the murder of his wife. Dr. H. H. Holmes was a complex man who was physically imposing, charismatic, intelligent, and persuasive. He may have been the first American serial killer, but he certainly was not the last.
